Some people automatically mistrust anyone...I agree. Some people automatically mistrust anyone who said something in the past and then later said something to contradict it. They say, "An old dog can't learn new tricks", but that isn't fair.

I was trained with the Plowden Report in the early seventies. I was evangelical about changing education for the better (as I thought then) and promoted mixed strategies for the teaching of reading. That meant a mix of 'sight' words without knowing what the letters were for, guessing from pictures and context, and also a little bit of phonics. Phonics meant a letter a week, including single letters and then 'sh', 'ch', 'th' and 'ng', in order to guess from the first letter or first two letters in a word - and that was it for the systematic teaching of phonics.

Thirty years later, I was introduced to synthetic phonics (through Jolly Phonics). I was amazed at the difference in the children's progress. They learned to read much faster and they loved reading too!

But of course, my own experience was not enough to promote synthetic phonics to others. I found out about the research and the experiences of people like Kevin.

So I changed my mind.
Elizabeth Nonweiler (Teach to Read)https://www.blogger.com/profile/05709434779417547227noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4594597540556650323.post-54537258081817198262017-06-11T20:24:00.664+10:002017-06-11T20:24:00.664+10:00Thank you, Kevin. Brilliant writing as usual.
This...Thank you, Kevin. Brilliant writing as usual.
This is exactly the subject I'm focused on at the moment. There was a great cartoon done by The Oatmeal about cherished beliefs, though it's a little American: http://theoatmeal.com/comics/believe
PS Nothing beats M&S undergarments. Nothing. I will not change my mind.Lyn Stonehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17627765276245256800noreply@blogger.com
